A parkland setting of grassland and broad leafed trees,
just south of Westleton, Old Hall Barn has looked down from its hillside
setting over the unchanging coastal landscape for more than 350 years.
Dating back to around 1650, the first barn (the kitchen and dining room
end of Old Hall Barn) was built in the mid 17th century, the adjoining
barn, now the delightful galleried drawing room with bedrooms and ensuite
bathrooms above, was built some 50 years later.
Farming in Suffolk was prospering during this period,
in part due to the burgeoning population in London during the Tudor and
Stewart period. Being close to the ports of Dunwich and Southwold, local
produce was easily transported by boat to London ports.
Suffolk butter was well known for its excellent flavour
and these beautiful old Suffolk barns were used as cow sheds for the large
farm. Farming fortunes came and went and the once prosperous farm was
eventually sold off in various lots until just The Old Hall and six acres
remained. Old Hall Barn, under separate ownership, lay empty and neglected
until its fantastic conversion in 2000.
Current owners Sarah and Kevin have great vision and
were determined to create a fitting setting for their stunning country
house -The Old Hall - and its beautiful barn. With this in mind they purchased
the surrounding grassland. Today elegant gardens and some 70 acres of
parkland, with over 27,000 broad leaf trees and 4.5km of boundary hedgerow
create the backdrop to Old Hall Barn.
The site of an 11th century monastery, The Old Hall was
five times larger than it is today. At one time the whole area would have
been moated, the water would have flowed into the large and attractive
lake, which lies to the rear of the property.
There are wonderful paths and byways around the property,
and beautiful heathland rides in the direction of Westleton and the sea
at Dunwich. With stables and a 4-acre paddock just below the Old Hall
Barn – visitors have the opportunity to take their own horses (during
the summer months by prior agreement with the owner).
