Know what you're getting

House-style: Built as a mill owner's house at the time of the industrial revolution, Calderbank Lodge has for many years been a country house - it's Edwardian owner commuting to Liverpool during the week. The current owner has added en suite bath and shower rooms to each bedroom and Calderbank Lodge is used exclusively as holiday accommodation for family reunions, groups of friends and shooting parties.

Grounds: The garden extends to well over an acre of lawns and shrub beds with seating areas from where you can look out over the surrounding hillside pastures. Sheep graze in the fields around the house.

Sleeps a total of 20 with 13 in the main house and a further 7 in the coach house attached to the main house. The main house may be booked on its own or with the coach house. Please contact us for prices for main house only.

Ideal for: A large family gathering or a group of friends. Great for anyone who loves the great outdoors, walking, cycling, horse riding, fishing, bird watching and even gliding can be enjoyed on the hills around Calderbank Lodge.

Situated in the North West of England, in the heart of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which covers 312sq miles of rural Lancashire and North Yorkshire, the area has a landscape rich in heritage. Whilst its scenery is not dissimilar to that of most beautiful parts of The Lake District, Bowland is unspoilt by the signage, litter and traffic jams which are so much a part of the Lakes today.

There were five main forests - the Royal Forest of Bowland; and three others belonging to the earldom of Lancaster at Bleasdale, Quernmore, Wyresdale and Pendle. Hunting in these areas was traditionally for deer and wild boar, and there is a wild boar park - do visit during your stay - just a couple of miles from the house.

The Forest of Bowland is littered with medieval features, the motte and bailey castles in the Lune valley and the monastery at Sawley are just two. There are grand halls, parks and stunning stone buildings. Dry stone walls and outbarns are a feature of the area and the irregular field patterns date back to the 15th and 16th century.

Not to be missed: This is one of our top ten locations and utterly beautiful. The Trough of Bowland is Lancashire's 'hidden gem'. This beautiful region remained largely inaccessible to the casual tourist until well into the 20th century - indeed, many still bypass the Trough in favour of the well-worn delights of the Lakes or Dales. Shaw explored the area and so did we - breathtaking!

Eating and Drinking: You don't get the influx of holidaymakers and visitors enjoyed by the Lake District and consequently neither do you get as many restaurants and pubs, so you have the option of enjoying catered meals at the house. A breakfast service is available and an excellent local chef will prepare you an great dinner using some of the fine local ingrediets available in the are - delicious local lamb and beef, as well as pork and even wild boar!

The area has many wonderful dairy farms and the Lancashire cheeses, yoghurts, and ice cream can all be purchased at the local shops in Garstang, where there is also a regular farmers' market. The Bowland Brewery, in Clitheroe, makes award winning beers - you can visit the brewery or simply purchase a pint at one of the many lovely village pubs in the Forest of Bowland.

Packing tips: Walking boots are a must, this is an area you will want to explore. There are bluebell woods, rhododendrons, bubbling streams and beautiful river valleys. Photographers and artists will love it.
